"Gangsta" rap is a form of hip-hop which was originally started in Philadelphia, by famous African-American rapper Schoolly D. Music of this form describes gangs, drugs, and violence. Although it was started in Philadelphia, it has become well known around the world through California, also known as "Westside" hip-hop. It's popular among the Black community due to the discrimination, poverty, and violence that they face on a daily basis, and "gangsta" rap gives them something to relate to provides a way to connect with one another. The success of this form of hip-hop is largely due to the many great rappers who all emerged under the label the Death Row Records. Legendary rappers such as Tupac, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg, are a few examples. A notable example would be Kendrick Lamar, who has emerged to be one of the greatest rappers who have ever lived with 13 Grammy Awards, and 6 Billboard Music Awards. Under the influence of these great rappers, California has become an icon of the rapping industry.
