Cape Town

Cape Town

While jazz was originally developed through influences from African and European music, it's interesting how jazz had to be introduced to places in Africa such as Cape Town from North America. It didn't just develop in Africa as well.

Jazz was introduced in South Africa through merchants from North American selling new records produced by New Orleans bands at that time (this was in the early 1900s). In the 1920s, Queenstown and Cape Town were the first places in South Africa to begin developing their own jazz style.

Cape Jazz

Cape Town has its own jazz style known as "Cape jazz." Cape zazz is similar to another style of African music called "marabi," but is influenced by the jazz coming from New Orleans - so more improvisational. Early Cape jazz featured easy to carry instruments, such as trumpets (and other brass instruments), banjos, guitars, and a few percussion instruments.

The Jazz Festival

Currently, Cape Town hosts one of the largest international jazz festivals in the world annually. It's called the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. This year, it seems like it could take place in March or April. The date is not confirmed yet. We want to schedule our trip to Cape Town around the same time so we can attend the festival.

Hotel and Dining

We will most likely be staying at the "Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront" in Cape Town. For dining, we don't really know what to expect so we will decide there.
